What's my Ski Ability?

If you haven't skied for a while, or you're looking for lessons and unsure where to start, this post will help you find the best lesson to get started on.​

​Use the information below as a tick-box exercise.

SNOWCUBS

(AGES 4-6)

Snowcubs Level 1
I can:

  1. Straight run down the hill

  2. Hold a snowplough at the start of the run

  3. Snowplough down the hill

​

If your child can do all of these 3 then move onto level 2!

​

Snowcubs Level 2

I can:

  1. Snowplough stop

  2. Change direction in a snowplough

  3. Ride the lift

​

If your child can do all of these 3, then move onto Snowcubs Level 3!

POLAR BEARS 

(AGES 7-10)

Polar Bears Level 1

I:

  1. Know what to wear when skiing

  2. Can put my boots and skis on by myself

  3. Can ski down the hill

  4. Check it is clear before I ski down

  5. Can side step up the hill

  6. Can ski in a plough (v-shape)

  7. Know where to stand when not skiing

If your child can do all of these, then move onto level 2!

​

Polar Bears Level 2:

I:

  1. Can go in and out of a plough when sliding

  2. Can use my plough to control my speed

  3. Can use the lift

  4. Can control myself by ploughing from Level 1

  5. Know where to look before setting off

  6. Can use the lift by myself

  7. Can steer one mat wide from Level 1.

If your child can do all of these, then move onto level 3!

​

Polar Bears Level 3:

I:

  1. Can turn around markers

  2. Can shape my turns to control my speed

  3. Can steer around objects and other skiers

  4. Can speed up and slow down as told by my instructor

  5. Ski with consideration for others

  6. Am ready to ski on my own

  7. Am ready to join Junior Development

If your child can do all of these, then move onto Junior Development!

SKI PACKAGE

(AGES 10+)

Ski Pack Level 1

  1. Introduction to equipment​

  2. Safety

  3. Basic Stance

  4. Coordination Exercises

  5. Balancing Exercises

  6. Introduction to snowploughs

​

If you or your child have completed all of these, move onto Ski Pack 2!

​

Ski Pack Level 2:

  1. Snowplough Glide

  2. Using snowplough for control

  3. Use of the lift

  4. Demonstrate snowplough turns

  5. Practicing the Ski Way Code

​

If you or your child have completed all of these, move onto Ski Pack 3!

 

If you haven't been able to demonstrate snowplough turns consistently, please move onto Ski Pack 2 Top-Up

​

Ski Pack Level 2 (Top-up)

  1. Demonstrate snowplough turns

​

Ski Pack Level 3:

  1. Control speed with turns

  2. Vary turn shapes

  3. Explore the slope above Level 1

  4. Introduction to pressure control

  5. Working knowledge of the Ski Way Code

  6. Able to turn 4 mats wide.

If you or your child have completed all of these, please move onto Ski Pack Level 4

​

Ski Pack Level 4:

  1. Varied turns to suit terrain

  2. Introduction to ski poles

  3. Practice plough parallel

  4. Introduction to side slipping

​

If you can do all of these, you would be classes as a recreational skier and can move onto coaching for further development.
